Born around the year 69 AD
Martyred in the year 155 AD
Patron saint of earaches, dysentery, and against dysentery.
Saint Polycarp was a prominent bishop in the early church, known for his strong faith and commitment to spreading the message of Jesus Christ. He was born around 69 AD in Smyrna, Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) and was a disciple of the apostle John.
Polycarp was known for his wisdom, humility, and courage in the face of persecution. He was chosen as the bishop of Smyrna and served in this role for many years, leading the Christian community with great devotion.
In 155 AD, during a wave of persecution against Christians, he was arrested and brought before the Roman authorities. Despite pressure to renounce his faith and offer sacrifice to the pagan gods, Polycarp remained steadfast in his beliefs and refused to renounce his Christian faith.
As a result, Saint Polycarp was sentenced to death by burning at the stake. According to tradition, when the flames failed to harm him, he was eventually killed by a sword.
He is remembered as a courageous defender of the Christian faith and a shining example of fidelity to Christ, even in the face of death. His writings, including an important letter to the Philippians, have been preserved and continue to inspire Christians around the world.
Saint Polycarp, pray for us
